Two Words: Patriot Act.

That may be the death of Freedom in America

Just another example of questionable provisions being attached to vital legislation in an effort to force the President into a politically volitile position.

“The president defended his action, writing that he signed the act, “chiefly because it authorizes funding for the defense of the United States and its interests abroad, crucial services for service members and their families, and vital national security programs that must be renewed.”

Exactly. He signed it rather than veto it and allow the vital components to go unauthorized and funded.

He clearly states that he has serious “reservations” about the detention clause (but let’s be real, people…this has already happened and is already the law…this preceded his administration.)

And yes, he CAN go back to Congress and ask then to overturn this element (I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for the Republicans to go along with this; this provides great SPIN, and they are not about to give it up without a long, protracted, highly visible fight).

OR he can overturn it through executive order (or do so once he gets a NEW Congress that actually has an interest in working with him/doing the work of the nation instead of making him one-term President at all costs).

Much ado about nothing, ultimately. He simply (reluctantly) renewed something the Right has been supporting for years to prevent vital authorizations from lapsing.

P.S. the fact that even the LEFT is up in arms about this and the Right is running with it with such giddy abandon should be all the proof needed to conclude that this was an orchestrated act intended to inflame the electorate with fears of “tyranny” and “martial law”. It just plays so perfectly to both sides.

This President knows and respects the Constitution more than any in our lifetime…the Bush boys argued that this sort of thing (and torture) was A-OK and slandered anyone who disagreed as a traitor/unpatriotic. At least THIS administration has “reservations” about it.

He has repeatedly shown himself unwilling to sacrifice the interests of the people or national security in the interests of his own political ambitions (agreeing to the extension of the Bush tax cuts for the top few percent rather than throw the long-term unemployed and 9/11 first responders under the train, for example).

And I will bet that some of the very people responsible for ensuring this provision made it into the final bill are the same ones who then proceeded to push it as a story.

Ron Paul for president? Like that will magically fix everything? THEY own congress (both parties) and THEY own the executive (bribe jobs post-service for everyone at a high level) and THEY own the judiciary (looking at you Clarence Scalia) so Ron Paul would be as trapped in the system as Obama is right now. You piggies can squeal all you want but you’re still gonna be the bacon in THEIR bacon-lettuce-tomato-on-white. Chew on that

Derrick, Ron Paul voted against the NDAA. He has said flat out the he would veto such a bill without reservation. His voting record is clear evidence that he means what he says. Let’s also not forget that we have an opportunity to elect good, liberty minded replacements for many of our elected officials this Nov. Let’s get Ron Paul in the White House and then get him some help in Congress.

Raven, that’s some serious political yoga you’re doing to try to support your man. There is no question that Obama could have grown a spine and vetoed the bill, telling Congress “Bring it back when you remove the offending language.” Congress wouldn’t have had the votes to override. So either Obama is a coward, ignorant of how to work the system or he’s lying. Given his track record of lies as laid out at Politifact, I’d bet it’s a truth impairment problem.

Let’s also not forget, as reported by several news agencies, including the left leaning Jon Stewart, Obama’s original threat to veto this bill was not based on civil rights violation concerns, but rather that the executive branch wouldn’t have total rights to violate civil rights.

This is absolutely ridiculous! This goes against our constitution on so many levels. Our founding fathers must be rolling in their graves. Way to go Obama. Glad this will be your last year as President.

Business as usual. One serpent two heads. Republican, Democrat, fundamentally they are the same. For once the Dems and Reps must show their true colors, and publicly agree on something. This has become a one party fascist state. Every rational citizen knows that this is an outright act of tyranny. Both parties are complicit. They distract us with petty binary squabbles, while they steal our national treasure and send our children our to wars in distant lands. I never actually thought that Orwell’s fears would become manifest in my life time.
Like most Americans, I love this country, but am ashamed of its disingenuous “leaders”. They rig the game so that you have no good choice come election time. Is Ron Paul for real? I hope so.

With reservations just isn’t good enough there Mr. President. At this point, I absolutely, positively do not trust anything you say. You’ve just stomped all over The Constitution and indicated that you do not value my rights as a citizen. While I don’t care for the GOP candidates, they’re looking better and better at this point.

Maybe you would like to know who stuck the so called unconstitutional wording into a defense appropriation bill, and why. Turns out this is just more GOP House “gotcha” politics. Either he signs it, or we don’t fund Defense for 2012. Get a clue. Obama 2012. I would never trust Republicans with my rights, especially knowing the source of this provision. Or the so called “Patriot” act, which Ron Paul correctly asserts is the most un patriotic law passed.

Congress has become America’s biggest and most insidious enemy in our march toward fascism.

This type of legislation is just one of many incremental steps taking the Federal Government further and further away from the Constitution. Eventually the result will be armed insurrection. Ron Paul may be the last chance we have to peacefully transition back to a Constitutional government without large scale civil unrest and violence in our cities and streets.

He signed the defense bill with the same “reservations” ….he is full of crap…..hurry up and vote him out….I could care less who’s next…..hope it’s RP, but I don’t think there’s enough rational people to get him in, too many other lunatics running around.

sounds like most everyone who comments on this is against this bill. We all need to wake up, the people in charge of us know more than we do.
